    Inaugural, NCL, NCL Joy

On April 26, we flew to Vancouver for a 3 night inaugural sailing on the Norwegian Joy.  The Joy was the first ship purpose built for the Asian market positioned in Shang Hi.  She weighs 167,000 tons and carries 3804 passengers.  She is a sister ship to the new Norwegian Bliss.

The decision was made to re-deploy the ship to sail in Alaska on 7 night cruises during the summer season and Mexican Riviera and the Panama Canal from Los Angeles/Miami the balance of the year.

To “Americanize” the ship required an extensive $50 million make over which touched virtually every aspect of the ship.  On embarkation, she looked and smelled like a brand new ship.  A noticeable carry over from the Asian market was the huge casino which actually has been downsized to allow for other venues more customary to American tastes.  The spa treatment rooms, for example, were expanded from 9 to 22.

In addition to the 2 level race car track, fascinating virtual world of the Galaxy Pavillion and Lazer tag, the Joy is the first Norwegian ship to have Concierge Class staterooms featuring:
    -24 hour Concierge service
    -priority embark and debarkation
    -Exclusive Concierge Lounge
-24 hour room service and private breakfast

Dining is always an adventure on Norwegian with 2 main dining rooms (Taste and Savor) and multiple specialty restaurants most with partial venues on the Boardwalk over looking the sea.  Be sure to make your specialty dining reservations well in advance before boarding because they have limited capacity.  French (Le Bistro), Cagney’s (steak house), Ocean Blue (seafood), Smoke House (BBQ), American Diner. Food Republic., La Cucina (Mexican), and Teppanyaki.  The food quality was generally good but was never hot enough.  Probably the result of the new crew getting their act together which is not unusual on an inaugural.

Although we didn’t have time to sample all the various entertainment onboard, we were able to see the 2 main shows:  Foot Loose was a good as any broad way production.  Elements was good but more in the style of Cirque De Soliel with little plot.

The Joy is all about choices with a dizzing array of options and there is something for every body,  If you want to travel in the lap of luxury in an exclusive atmosphere treat yourself to the Haven ….all suites, private pool, private dining room and key card access.  It’s like a cruise within a cruise.  You can enjoy all the ship has to offer and then retreat to your own private enclave.  It’s the best.
